Beginner’s Guide: How to Build Your First PC

How to Build Your First PC

Everything you need to know — step-by-step for first-time builders.

Building your own PC might feel intimidating, but it's actually one of the most rewarding tech projects you can do — and no, you don’t need to be a pro.

In this guide from The Rig Room, I’ll walk you through:

  • What parts you need

  • Where to start

  • Step-by-step building tips

  • Common mistakes to avoid

🧱 Step 1: Choose Your Parts

Start by researching the key components:

  • CPU

  • Motherboard

  • RAM

  • Storage (SSD or HDD)

  • GPU (if needed)

  • Power Supply (PSU)

  • PC Case

🛠️ Use PCPartPicker to check compatibility.

🧼 Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Find a clean table. Gather tools:

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Anti-static wrist strap (optional but good)

  • A good light source

🧊 Step 3: Install the CPU and RAM

Handle the CPU carefully. Align the triangle corner and gently drop it into the socket. Lock it down and install your RAM sticks into the correct channels.

⚙️ Step 4: Mount the Motherboard

Place your I/O shield first. Then gently lower your motherboard onto the standoffs in your case and screw it down.

🔌 Step 5: Install Storage and GPU

Slide in your SSD or HDD. Use the right data and power cables. Install the GPU into the top PCIe slot.

🔋 Step 6: Connect Your Power Supply

Plug in:

  • 24-pin ATX power

  • 8-pin CPU power

  • GPU power cables (6 or 8-pin)

  • SATA power for storage

💡 Step 7: Boot It Up

Double-check connections. Plug in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Power it on.

If you see the BIOS, you're golden. Then install Windows (or Linux) using a USB stick.
